2018 Wrestling Venues

Last week saw Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling at its extremes. On Friday night, at Rothbury Mart, the only stand-alone, indoor wrestling event of the season, attracted a huge enthusiastic crowd of spectators and wrestlers for over three hours of increasingly frenetic action. Wrestlers had travelled from Lancashire, Yorkshire, Brittany and the Firth of Clyde to compete.
On Sunday, as Loweswater Show subsided to its completion in a slight drizzle, the wrestling programme started in a grassy main ring, and more than a dozen unknown and untrained young wrestlers from the local area entertained the crowd. Only Gemma Coulthard in the Ladies and John Harrington were regular and trained wrestlers.

Rarely, has a wrestling event built up to the sort of climax achieved at Rothbury for the final of the All Weights late into the night. Local passion backed the young giant Zak Singleton and the Hale brothers, Joe and Jack. The away team came from the Brocklebank brothers Thomas and Graham. Favourite to win was probably Thomas Brocklebank but he was out-wrestled by Joe Hale's long legs. In the end, the final lay between Jack Hale and Graham Brocklebank, and inevitably it went to three falls. Brocklebank struck first with a big swing and a twist backover. Hale answered by countering a Brocklebank attack, to leave the whole night balanced for a sudden-death encounter.

Amongst a crescendo of noise, Graham Brocklebank lifted Jack Hale and hiped him. The normally smiley, relaxed Graham Brocklebank leapt shoulder-high, punched the air with both fists and landed on his feet with all the passion of the night on his face. Then he smiled. He had already won his own weight, the 13½ stones, beating Jack Brown in the final with swings and twists over the knee.
See, hear and speak no evil: Joe Brown, Joe Harrington and Jimmy Pringle

Yet despite all this success, the trophy for the best wrestler went elsewhere. The only Scot, Paul Craig of Wemyss Bay, who trains at Hamilton, won the 15 stones with great athleticism and he was duly rewarded. On receiving his award, he casually did a back-somersault to celebrate.

The Bretons eventually went home after a sustained visit at our busiest time of year. They are always good, but this year they were outstanding, a group of a dozen wrestlers all able to demonstrate the highest skills of our wrestling.

Another Frenchman, Guy Jaouen, came to stay with me for a week. He is the main founder of the international organisation which led to the Bretons and Icelanders being in our lists this year. His work for traditional sport takes him all over Africa and Europe, and there he was sitting on a straw bale at Hesket Newmarket Show watching the terrier racing and the wrestling with a big smile on his face. Behind the action in the ring he could see Hesket Newmarket nestling in the Northern Fells. In the ring and around him, our local culture was being celebrated with natural zest. It does not get any better than this.
