2018 Wrestling Venues

 a busy ring at Gosforth
One of the most sustained and high-powered struggles of the wrestling season took place at the Lakeland Country Fair, Torver, before an appreciative crowd, as Paul Gibson, the referee, fought to remove a rock which he had discovered just peeping out from the sward in the middle of the ring. The rock which had probably been in place since the Ice Age would have served well as a foundation stone for a house, so Paul's initial attempts to lever it out with a pointed fence post caused local earthquakes but no success. A change of tactics brought a little spade into play and that eventually enabled earthworks assistant, multi-champion Tom Harrington, to hipe it up and away. The initial problem was solved, but now we had a dirty great hole in the middle of the ring.

Max Bates goes to buttock Matty Hodgson in the championship final

Max Bates with his Championship silverware at Gosforth

Much more serious was the Boys' Under 15 and 8 Stones Championship at Gosforth the previous day when the final between Max Bates and Matty Hodgson was a worthy culmination of a seasonof close wrestling between them. Four bouts were needed to settle the matter in the final with each fall teetering one way then the other.

Bates always has a weight disadvantage when wrestlingbecause he is so compact and light for his age, but he makes up for that with his buttocking skills and never-say-die attitude. He had to attack to win, as was shown in the second bout when Hodgson felled him with a cross-buttock. In the deciding bout he changed tactics and went for the inside-click and won another close fall.

He had already won the earlier 7st competition, so he went all the way home to Coquetdale in Northumberland with money in his pocket, a big silver cup on his lap and a permanent grin on his face. All four youth championships have gone to Rothbury Academy this year.
Degrees of happiness Mark Wharton, John Harrington and Linda Scott at Gosforth

Referee, Robin Murray keeps control as Mark Wharton hipes Michael Kirkham Thomas Gibson hipes Graham Brocklebank at Torver

Over the week-end Tyson Benson, Rosie Hodgson, Gus Singer and John Harrington all had multiple wins at Gosforth, or Allendale or Torver. It was good to see that Jack hale continues to stir up the All Weights classes, and I appreciated Thomas Gibson's long wait before hiping Graham Brocklebank twice in the All-Weights final at Torver.

No fewer than twelve Bretons and six Icelanders are now in the country to take part in wrestlings' crowded programme in the next ten days. Oh, and Carlisle Wrestling Club has its AGM on Wednesday 29th August at 7:45pm. Alterations to the Currock House Gym mean that changes of venue and timing are an issue.
