2018 Wrestling Venues

Jack Brown at Skelton

The wrestling at Skelton Show started promptly and finished neatly fifteen minutes before kick-off at the World Cup. At Haltwhistle Carnival, Alf Harrington, wielding a little tin-pot megaphone fought a long battle with the amplified pop music and a thunderous and prolonged stint from a band made up entirely of drums.

In the ring there was more in the way of continuity with Jack Brown winning at both events, doing particularly well to fell Jack Hale of Rothbury in the All Weights at Skelton.

John Gibson fells Matty Hodgson; Tom Harrington wears a racy hat

The ubiquitous pair of youngsters, John Gibson and Matty Hodgson, near neighbours at Low Hesket, put in their usual stint of skilful wrestling even when overweighted by the opposition. And there was a generous helping of Hodgsons at both places.

There was also much in the way of variety as the boys' classes were different to the usual at Skelton which allowed Connor and Mark Wharton to prosper, and Ryan Armstrong, too, to notch up an excellent Under 18 win at his nearest Show. Overall, fourteen wrestlers came away with wins over the week-end.

Jack Hale, at present studying at Edinburgh University had an interesting return to the ring at Skelton where he met Jack Brown in the All Weights final. The first fall went to Brown with what my notes call "hold and knee". Hale got his well oiled hipe into action for the second fall, only for Jack Brown to fell him in the third with a late, late twist.

Linda Scott, Aaron Younger and sunny day at Haltwhistle

Aaron Younger came out of the Haltwhistle ring after the first bout of the day with dismay written over his face after being felled by the eventual winner, and his great rival, Rosie Hodgson. But by the end of the action he was smiling broadly after wrestling so well in the Under 15s against heavy opposition. For that performance he was awarded the best wrestler trophy.

It was good to see Tracy Hodgson back in the ring winning the ladies and to see successful local wrestlers Alfie Story and Dan Watson going so well to keep the Haltwhistle tradition stemming from the Alan Walton family.

Finally Jack Hale had his day when he won the All Weights, gaining revenge on Jack Brown in an early round and taming the large and skilful younger generation in the form of Zak Singleton in the final.

Amazingly the CWWA busy programme has a lull this coming weekend, but wrestlers and spectators can still find action at the Scottish Wrestling Bond event at Loch Lomond Highland Games on Saturday 14th July. Weigh-in 11am. And on Sunday at Brunton Park, Carlisle United is staging a fun day which includes a wrestling demonstration at 11am; all welcome.
