Ullswater Country Fair, held on the cricket Field in Patterdale, was short of senior wrestlers, but the youngsters and visitors gave a lively sample of our traditional sport for visitors and locals. For most of the afternoon we were in direct competition with a well stuffed marquee where spasmodic cheering indicated the progress of the England football team in Russia, but we held an interested audience nevertheless.
Two wrestlers were particularly welcome in the ring for the senior wrestling; Ben Harrison of Abbeytown and Andrew Amos of Bishop Auckland in County Durham.
Ben was particularly welcome because for a year or two he has been missing from the wrestling after a few years of regular attendance with his brother and sister. He returned like the Prodigal Son and mopped up the younger 12 stone wrestlers with easy assurance.
Two stars: John Gibson lifts Myles Stainton at Patterdale.

The end of the holiday; Andrew Amos comes down to earth under Thomas Brocklebank

Andrew Amos is another sort of wrestler who appears in our rings. I could see him taking particular interest as the youngsters competed at the start of the event. Then he rose up and wandered over to put in his entry. A complete wrestling novice, he was a strapping lad from Bishop Auckland on the final day of his Lake District holiday with his family, and he fancied a go. Unfortunately for him he met Thomas Brocklebank in the first round of the All Weights, so it was three generations of All Weights Champions versus a holiday-maker from "furren parts". The result was inevitable but I hope he enjoyed the experience.
John Gibson and Matty Hodgson competed hard with varying results; John won the Under 15s but Matty competed in three finals. The Hodgson family had two winners with Rosie and Ted, but Gemma Coulthard did well to fell Hannah in the final of the Ladies event.
Finally, one wrestler who failed to win any prizemoney, can hold up his head as high as any. As commentator Alf Harrington said in summing up the event, Myles Stainton, in separate categories had pulled off the two falls of the day when he cleanly buttocked bigger wrestlers with skill and panache.
