Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling Association

A black bin-bag around the torso is not the answer!

A New Year with its resolutions and plans: what should a Cumberland and Westmorland wrestler have in mind? One system to be avoided is the late, crash diet to gain entry into an important event. The black bin-bag wrapped round a sweating torso running into the distance ten minutes before the weigh-in is not a good plan. Any weight control has to be over a planned course of time.
The same applies to training and participation. Year after year I have seen good wrestlers fail in their ambitions because they turn out without the sharpening up which comes from regular competition, and regular attendance at an academy in the Spring.

This year there is plenty of action and important competition before the grass season begins in early May. Darren Whitfield, a Rothbury coach, is organising a trip to Brittany for the Breton Backhold Championships. This year the event moves to Guingamp, leaving on February 15th, returning in the early hours of Monday February 19th .
Please contact Darren Whitfield 07734 785937.
The approximate cost is £230.00 which includes coach, ferry, accommodation and meals. The trip has 25 confirmed travellers so far, but anybody else wishing to attend, must give names to Darren this week.

Early in the following month the Academy Shield Competition will be held on Saturday March 3rd 2018 at the Dr Thomlinson C of E Middle School, Rothbury NE65 7RJ.
Two extra ladies categories have been added this year. A full team will have fifteen members to fit the following categories: 6st, 7st, 8st, 9st, 10st, 11st, 12st, 13st, 14st, 15st, All Weights, Ladies 8st, Ladies 10st, Ladies 12st and Ladies All Weights (2lbs is allowed for costume)

The European Espoirs Championships which we host in Penrith this year from the 6th to the 9th of April has also stirred plenty of action already, with a training schedule drawn up which surpasses any previous efforts. A dozen sessions split between the mats at Rothbury and Carlisle are already scheduled with the most imminent being at Currock House, Carlisle, at 8.30 in the morning on Sunday 14th January.
Even more immediate is the effort by three wrestlers to raise sponsorship of the Espoirs event by their participation in a half-marathon. Good luck to wrestlers Andrew Carlile, Connie Hodgson and David Barnes who will be running the North Lakes New Year Half Marathon at Cockermouth this Sunday, January 7th to raise funding for the European Espoirs Wrestling Championships.

Anyone wishing to sponsor them please contact Andrew on 07771 635761.

All three of them are champion wrestlers. Andrew Carlile won the 11st Championship at Silloth this year; Connie Hodgson trimmed herself down for the new Ladies 10st Championship in 2016, and has continued to wrestle at that weight since. David Barnes, a heavyweight wrestler, has more weight to carry round the course, but I hope he can enjoy the wonderful Lake District scenery as he heads out towards Loweswater on Sunday.
