Honours shared around

TWO events over the last weekend produced no fewer than 10 different winners with only Watchai Noimai and John Harrington managing to secure a brace of wins.

The Roman Wall Show on Saturday struggled for entries although this did not diminish the quality of the wrestling.

Watchai Noimai, of Anthorn , is in only his second season on the grass but he is already making his mark with the standard of his wrestling, and has determination in abundance. His pair of Under 15s wins were both achieved against significantly heavier opposition and at Roman Wall he was awarded the prize for the best performance.

John Harrington has been producing class performances for some time so it is easy to forget he is still only 18. A comfortable win on Saturday, despite losing a fall to Johnjo Pattinson, was only the prelude for a more spectacular performance on Sunday.

A second win at 11½ stones, against his old foe Andrew Carlile, came courtesy of an outside hipe for the first fall and a hank for the second.

Although he did not win any further classes he left his mark on the proceedings. Robert Thomlinson calling in at Morpeth after a weekend at Berwick, found to his cost that Harrington is never beaten until he is flat out on the turf, and Jason Davidson had to call on all his experience after finding himself on the wrong end of a leg up buttock.

Despite a state of exhaustion, Davidson was able to overcome the determination of Mark Lowery and had far too much experience in the final of the 15½ stones for David Barnes, who himself had taken the head prize in the 13½ stones at the expense of John Harrington.

The action continues in the North East this weekend at Kirkheaton Show before it returns to the Lake District next week with the annual Patterdale Dog Show.
