Mason gets the nod

WRESTLERS from the academies at Kendal, Milnthorpe and Carlisle met on the grass at Sedbergh Gala to open the new season. The first winner was Stuart Mason of Milnthorpe who felled the latest Brocklebank, Scott, in the final of the Under 12 Years.

Graham Brocklebank of Warton has only few more weeks to compete in the Under 15 Years, and he made the most of it, felling Watchai Noimai of Anthorn in the final.

Brocklebank is big, strong, experienced and skilful, so his success was not unexpected. And in the absence of senior middleweights which are rarer than hens' teeth in the south of the county, he went on winning until the heavyweights trundled into action.

Luckily for him the Under 15 Years Championship is early in the wrestling calendar this year, being held at the Carlisle Vintage Society's Rally at Brisco Farm, Carlisle on Sunday, June 5, so he should be an overwhelming favourite to win; except that there is a family christening which could fell him before can take part.

The Kendal area is well stocked with substantial wrestlers well able to take on all-comers. The entry at Sedbergh would have made an impressive tug-o'-war team, but they were considerably more mobile than that. Thomas Brocklebank, Andrew Bentham, John Wilson, Trevor Hodgson and Joseph Robson pointed the difference between men and boys as they locked horns.

Top of this mighty pile was Joseph Robson, the 14st Champion at the recent European Championships. He found the Kendal coach, John Wilson, a handful as Wilson strove to buttock. That ploy worked once, but Robson gained the decider.

Hodgson won the final.
