Craig lands trophy for a second month

THE real value of a trophy is what it represents rather than what was paid for it: a universal truth especially worthy at Carlisle Wrestling where a small, battered cup which long ago lost all its silver-plating is awarded each month for the best performance in all the boys' wrestling.

Last month Craig Ridley won it; this month he won it again, for a display of elegant wrestling which relied on timing and balance as well as an impressive range of chips. He buttocked, back-heeled, hiped and twisted. Best of all was a right leg outside hype which felled an opponent nearly four stones heavier than himself with the greatest economy of effort.

If the men had a Victor Ludorum Trophy the winner would certainly have been Andrew Carlile of Carlisle, for he went through the whole night unbeaten, after a shaky first bout with Richard Dixon. Carlile's main weapon was a variation on a salto, a throw used in Freestyle wrestling where you throw you opponent over your shoulder and arch your back in such a way that he hits the ground first

The wide draw of Carlisle Wrestling Club is well illustrated by the list of trophy winners with wrestlers from West Cumbria to the West and the South Tyne valley in the East. There is even a wrestler from Carlisle.
